Green Deal: Sustainable batteries for a circular and climate neutral economy.

The Commission proposed a new Batteries Regulation (with Annexes) on 10 December 2020. This Regulation aims to ensure that batteries placed in the EU market are sustainable and safe throughout their entire life cycle.  Batteries and accumulators play an essential role to ensure that many daily-used products, appliances and services work properly, constituting an indispensable energy source in our society. Every year, approximately 800.000 tons of automotive batteries, 190.000 tons of industrial batteries, and 160.000 tons of consumer batteries enter the European Union.

Mayor Janey Announces Expanded Recycling Services

Mayor Janey, in collaboration with the City of Boston’s Environment Department, Boston Public Schools (BPS) and Northeast-based textile recycling company Helpsy, has delivered dropboxes for residents to bring their textiles to eleven BPS locations across Boston. These dropboxes are a part of the City of Boston’s work to expand recycling services citywide, creating a healthier and more sustainable environment for generations to come. This expansion of services builds on the work of Boston’s Zero Waste Plan and BPS Sustainability efforts in reducing the amount of waste generated and going to landfill or incineration.  “Promoting sustainable practices are especially important as we work towards a greener and more equitable Boston,” said Mayor Janey. “I am excited that the City of Boston, in collaboration with Boston Public Schools and Helpsy, has delivered dropboxes for residents to bring their textiles to eleven BPS locations throughout Boston. Recycling contaminants trend up in Nanaimo, well above provincial goals

The Harbour City’s quest to become more green is being thwarted by a blue bin.  Data collected by Recycle BC over the last two years in Nanaimo showed levels of improperly recycled materials and unrecyclable materials finding their way into the curbside blue recycling bins is increasing.  Taaj Daliran, city manager of sanitation and recycling, told Council on Monday, July 6 there is still a great deal of confusion about recycling.  “Some of this contamination is not actually contamination, it’s just mis-recycling. Scientists Create Enzyme That Can Destroy Plastic Within Days, Not Years

Scientists Create Enzyme That Can Destroy Plastic Within Days, Not Years

Plastic has got to be both a blessing and curse for this planet. However, lately, with the amount of plastic that’s getting accumulated and dumped, it has been causing some serious damage to the environment.  However, it looks like researchers have developed the perfect thing to combat this problem. They’ve developed a cocktail of plastic-eating enzymes which can actually degrade plastic in a matter of days — something that normally takes hundreds of years to degrade. The enzyme cocktail includes PETase and MHETase. These are produced by a type of bacteria that feeds on PET plastic (often found in plastic bottles) dubbed Ideonella Sakaiensis.

Spinning electricity from heat and cold

Spinning electricity from heat and cold

A new device harvests two types of energy during the daytime, making it cool on one end and hot on the other, to generate electricity around the clock. With further improvements, the device could be used in off-grid Internet-of-things sensors.
The details were published in the journal Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (“Simultaneous harvesting of radiative cooling and solar heating for transverse thermoelectric generation”).
Thermal emission is radiated from the top of the device, keeping it cool, while sunlight is absorbed at the bottom, keeping that part warm. The temperature gradient and types of materials used lead to the generation of a spin current that is converted to thermoelectric voltage. (Image: Ken-ichi Uchida)

BASF expands biopolymer portfolio with Hydagen Clean

BASF has added a new product to its biopolymer line-up. Hydagen Clean is a cold processable rheology modifier, obtained from the tuber of the konjac plant, native to southwest China. The COSMOS-approved texturising biopolymer is said to be suitable for aqueous systems like gels, fluids and serums, as well as for novel formats like patches, jellies and peel-off formulations thanks to its film-forming and gelation properties. Due to its low microbial count and rapid dissolution in cold and hot water, Hydagen Clean is said to be easy to use.

Recycling – LVMH to recycle textiles in partnership with weturn – APLF.com

Recycling – LVMH to recycle textiles in partnership with weturn – APLF.com

LVMH has solidified a partnership between several of its fashion maisons and weturn, a company that offers an innovative recycling chain dedicated to unsold textiles from major fashion houses. Founded in 2020, weturn is the first recycling chain dedicated to unsold textiles, rolls of fabric and offcuts from major fashion houses, which are all protected by intellectual property. The company then transforms them into new quality yarns and fabrics that are 100 percent traceable and European-made.
LVMH to date has not named which of its designer brands is recycling textiles. The issue with upcycling recognisable fabrics is that they may end up back in the marketplace when used by a different brand. Companies such as Valentino have seen a branded V-print fabric, uniquely developed for the house, used by designers who found leftover fabric in a re-sale shop on the outskirts of Paris. LVMH will be keen for its repurposed textiles to not be recognisable in the marketplace.

Minimise single-use items

Minimise single-use items

Single-use items or disposable items are products and packaging that we throw out after only one use. These items are used for only minutes but their impact on our environment can last thousands of years. Even when these items are recyclable, we use up energy and our environment’s natural resources to produce these easily-avoidable items. Avoid first – What’s better than reusing or recycling an item? Avoiding it in the first place. Ask yourself, do you really need it? And if the answer is no, then avoid it.
