The process of global warming begins with the release of greenhouse gases, such as methane, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, water vapour and fluorinated gases. Outgoing infrared radiation, or longwave radiation, is absorbed from the Earth’s surface by these gases as well as aerosols, hence the lower layers of the atmosphere become warmer and less energy is emitted by the Earth’s surface. This is known as the greenhouse effect; without it, the Earth would be a very cold place, with a mean surface temperature about 33°C lower than it is now. But approximately since the beginning of the Industrial Age, the concentrations of greenhouse gases have reached unprecedented levels. The amount of carbon dioxide in the troposphere, or the lowest layer of the atmosphere, has risen from 280 ppm to about 400 ppm. methane levels have exceeded 1800 ppb, an increase from approximately 700 ppb in pre-Industrial times.

As socially and environmentally conscious people with customers who are the same, we get a fair number of questions about the sustainability practices of our company. The short answer is two fold – 1) We’ve put a lot of work and research into this front, particularly given how small we are and 2) While we’ve made some solid progress, we (and the food industry in general) still have a ways to go. 

ALDI has committed to removing single-use plastic from all of its own-brand tea bags by the end of this year. The UK’s fifth-largest supermarket will replace the oil-based plastic sealant on the bags with biodegradable materials. It follows a similar move by Sainsbury’s in January. Aldi said the outer plastic wrapping on boxes will also be dropped. The move means 1.4 billion pieces of single-use plastic will be removed. Richard Gorman, of Aldi, said: “The changes we’ve made to our tea range will help us reduce our environmental impact and offer our customers even more environmentally sustainable options.” He added: “By the end of this year, all of our own-brand tea bags will be biodegradable and contain no plastic whatsoever.”
