Resource Magazine has been scrutinising local authority waste data to understand trends for almost 20 years. Our focus is the journey towards zero waste. And while that is not going to be achieved anytime soon, rating performance according to the amount of residual waste that people produce is an effective gauge to measure progress. For obvious reasons, governments, businesses and citizens are focused on tackling CO2e emissions, yet the intensity of our resource use and wastage still warrants consideration. Not only are there implications in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, but failure to conserve raw materials has the potential to derail socio-economic stability. Unchecked demand for and supply of raw materials also puts communities and natural habitats at risk the world over.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr. Colm Kelleher will officially launch 8 newly installed city parklets this week, on August 31st and September 2nd. Following a call-out for “parklet partners” in September 2020, a number of local businesses and community associations were selected to take part in the National Transport Authority-funded scheme. The parklets, designed by Siobhán Keogh Design and built by Benchspace Cork, are then planted and maintained by the “parklet partners”, with funding for their upkeep administered by the City Council.
The following parklets will be officially launched by the Lord Mayor on Tuesday 31st August:
Cook Street (Partner: Il Padrino restaurant)
South Mall (Partners: The Imperial Hotel and Cork Zero Waste)
Union Quay (Partner: Three Little Piggies Deli)
Sullivan’s Quay (Partners: The Quay Co-op, Creativity & Change – MTU Crawford and Green Spaces for Health)
Wandesford Quay (Partners: Lavit Gallery, Backwater Artists Group, Cork Printmakers and Wandesford Quay CLG)
Celebrating individuality, diversity, and embodiment, the third edition of Rio Ethical Fashion took place last week. Leading voices stirred up conversations about impending challenges and opportunities in the sustainable fashion industry. A spicy debate focused on the future of fashion upon the expansion of the Metaverse—the so-called “new, persistent virtual world.” Metaverse will host an increasing number of people throughout 2021. Currently, digital fashion is mostly restricted to video games (think of Gucci’s digital tennis).
