The shift to Industry 5.0 could lead to job losses if workers are not retooled and reskilled, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has warned. In a special supplement titled, “Capturing the Digital Economy: A proposed measurement framework and its applications,” experts also said shifting to Industry 5.0 from Industry 4.0, however, would still lead to increased consumption and job opportunities if workers are able to adapt. “Data suggest that, while effects of technology improvements observably reduce labor demand as a result of substitution, positive job impacts coming from consumption and new labor requirements may compensate,” the ADB said.
SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) and Syracuse University are collaborating to establish the New York State Center for Sustainable Materials Management (SMM), funded by a $5.75 million grant over five years from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC). The center-the first of its kind in the United States-will be devoted to practices in waste reduction, reuse, recycling and composting.

Battery storage and green hydrogen – markets that are critical for India’s renewable future and energy security – could scale up rapidly in the country, bolstered by government policy and private company ventures, according to a new briefing note from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA). “Grid-scale energy storage technologies will play a critical role in India’s decarbonisation journey, helping to integrate the 450 gigawatts (GW) of variable renewable energy capacity targeted by 2030 into the grid,” said, IEEFA analyst Kashish Shah. “The Government of India is giving the right push for the Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) market through production-linked incentive schemes, big battery storage capacity tenders and improving the market structure to be more competitive.”

In a previous blog post, I discussed the Design Lifecyle as having three primary stages: Pre-Building, Building and Post-Building. I spent considerable time in the Pre-Building phase focused on the sourcing and manufacture of sustainable construction materials. In this installment, we’ll segue into the Building stage and plumb the depths of sustainable construction techniques.
In his 2011 book “Waste,” Mohamed Osmani estimated that construction waste produced on a typical job site is as much as 30% of the total weight of the building materials delivered to the site. So for every 100 pounds of construction material brought to the site, 30 of it will be wasted. That means that by 2025, the amount of construction waste generated each year will be over 2.2 billion tons.
