This time of the year is always very special for me, with Intel Corporation publishing its Corporate Responsibility Report followed shortly by our process to adapt and localize the report for our communities around the world. For more than a decade, I have been proud to lead the creation of our Intel Israel local report. However, this year offered twice the excitement for me and our team, since the launch of our report coincided with Intel Israel’s 45th anniversary as well as a significant commitment by the Israeli government to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The current use of plastics is not sustainable due to the tremendous amount of discarded plastic waste accumulating as debris in landfills, oceans and other natural habits across the world. Mechanical recycling, which as related to plastics is also called back-to-plastics recycling, has been used since the 1970s. However, the quantities of recycled plastics vary geographically. Lately there has been a noticeable uptick in buzz around chemical recycling technology as a potential solution to the plastics crisis. Meanwhile, critics point to drawbacks which include environmental health risks, inefficiency in terms of the amount of waste plastic that becomes new plastic, and high costs.
When I arrived at college, the hot rumor was that drinking alcohol through a straw was the fast-track to getting trashed. My crew worked through boxes of straws to learn firsthand it was just an urban myth.
