EcoVadis is a recognised business sustainability ratings organisation covering 200 industry categories, 175 countries and regions, and over 90,000 companies of all sizes worldwide. Epson’s latest platinum rating reflects its ongoing commitment and notable improvements towards sustainable growth in the past year.

Traditionally, goods produced by our industrial system have a linear lifecycle. As a result, both industrial activities and society rely on the continuous extraction of finite natural resources with substantial amounts of waste discarded to landfills and incinerators. Concerns over this unsustainable linear production and consumption model have led to the development of the “circular economy” concept, which seeks to close the loop on material and product flows, this increasing the efficiency of resource use and reducing waste generation. The circular economy concept aims to decouple economic growth from resource depletion and environmental degradation to achieve balance among environment, society, and economy. Transitioning to a circular economy requires fundamental changes in product design, process technologies, business models, government policy, and consumer behavior.

At Best Buy, we aspire to drive forward the circular economy by maximizing the value of the resources in consumer electronics. We do this by reducing product damage prior to customer use, extending the useful life of products through our repair and trade-in programs, and recycling to the highest-value commodity at a product’s end of life. Best Buy has been collecting consumers’ used electronics since 2009 through our in-store recycling program. The program is both solving a customer need and keeping potentially harmful materials out of landfills. We have collected more than 1.7 billion pounds of electronics and appliances, and we are on track to meet our goal of collecting 2 billion pounds by 2020. However, we still wanted to innovate and move the industry forward.
