‘Sustainable materials and products’ are the new black in fashion. Commitment is high with fashion brands from large to small and new to iconic, all are focusing on improving their sustainability like never before. When it comes to environmental sustainability in the fashion textile space, raw materials have been one of, if not the, most significant focus areas. Generally speaking, the industry has used the same raw materials for generations: t. Their environmental burdens that these materials bear are major contributors to global climate change, natural resource depletion, and biodiversity loss – to name a few among a long list of concerning effects. Therefore, there’s a dire need for the next generation of textile materials, and that calls for innovation. “Going for all of these challenges, we need actually innovation.” – An interviewee

With a fleet of more than 3,000 lift trucks, a large retailer with hundreds of locations throughout the United States had difficulty monitoring and managing its equipment maintenance activity and downtime.  The retailer used a guaranteed maintenance plan through a secondary provider and had little insight into key metrics like repair history, intervals between failures, preventative maintenance (PM) completions and first-time fixes.  Without the ability to monitor these metrics, the retailer lacked clarity regarding the impact of maintenance on its bottom line, along with the value of the secondary provider’s guaranteed maintenance plan, which it was charged for monthly.

A 30-strong group of EPFL students came up with an impressive array of inventive ideas during the pilot Climate and Sustainability Action Week (CSAW), with the goal of making our campus – and society – greener and cleaner. Their ideas included an “Eco-Score” to rate the environmental impact of meals served at EPFL restaurants, a new digital currency and platform called Karma for exchanging goods and services within the EPFL community, and a web browser add-on called Web Citizens to combat misinformation and encourage critical thinking.
