Washington State Legislators Sen. Kevin Ranker (D-Orcas Island) and Rep. Strom Peterson (D-Edmonds) recently held a press conference at the Seattle Aquarium, and were joined by the Surfrider Foundation and a coalition of advocates in support of the “Washington Reusable Bag Act” to announce they are introducing companion bills in January, 2019, at the state legislature to address plastic pollution and recycling contamination due to plastic bags. The reusable bag legislation will build off the existing 23 local ordinances already in place in the state of Washington. The coalition organizations supporting this policy include: Environment Washington, Puget Soundkeeper, Seattle Aquarium, Surfrider Foundation and Zero Waste Washington. They have helped to pass plastic bag ordinances at the local level, most notably playing a lead role in the city of Bellingham, which served as a model for other communities. Zero-packaging stores – where rows of jars and refill stations sit full of food that is ready for consumers to fill up containers brought from home – have proliferated in recent years. Yet they tend to be more expensive than their supermarket equivalents and therefore a more aspirational offering – and they may not be as beneficial to the environment as they first seem. Damage to products is the prime concern – packaging protects goods on a journey, saving shoppers valuable pennies and keeps items fresher for longer, too.
The world is slowly getting greener. Electric cars are on the uptake, solar panels are becoming the norm, and wind power has taken off (becoming 10% of UK renewable energy source). When it comes to being conscious about our clothes, there seems to be a sense of sustainability. Which leads to the question, what constitutes an item of sustainable clothing? Who is trying to recycle?
