Forget furnaces and fireplaces. In Stockholm, Sweden, residents are staying warm with the help of excess heat from more than 6,000 computer servers. It’s one of the many creative ways that green data centers around the world are trying to become more energy-efficient and more environmentally friendly. The idea belongs to Swedish internet service provider Bahnhof, which has turned an old rock cavity below a public park into a cutting-edge data center. Known as Pionen, the futuristic space is filled with densely packed IT hardware and infrastructure that produces a massive amount of energy and heat. When it established Pionen in 2007, Bahnhof wasted that heat by venting it away. Then, it decided to partner with local energy company Stockholm Exergi, whose Open District Heating program allows entities that produce excess heat to generate revenue by recovering surplus heat and selling it as energy with which to heat homes and businesses.

Enso – circular economy tyres for electric cars –

A couple of months ago I wrote about the roadside pollution from electric cars – the particles from tyres and brakes. In the UK, non-tailpipe emissions are around 8% of air pollution, so it’s not a huge contributor to the problem. But due to the weight of their batteries, electric vehicles may produce more tyre particles than fossil fuel vehicles, and so it may be a more significant source of pollution in future. If we want electric cars to live up to the ‘zero emissions’ labels that many of them already boast, we’re going to need better tyres. Particles from tyres also enter watercourses and are a significant contributor to ocean pollution, giving us a second reason to pay attention to this more or less invisible environmental problem. Enso is a start-up that is developing tyres specifically for electric cars – the first to do so that I’m aware of, and potentially ahead of a rush in that direction. That means they will be designing for efficiency, in order to maximise range. They’re also working on durability, and a cleaner, lower carbon tyre.

SmartFarm device harvests air moisture for autonomous, self-sustaining urban farming

A team of researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) has recently developed a simple solution to address two of the world’s biggest problems—water scarcity and food shortage. They created a solar-powered, fully automated device called “SmartFarm” that is equipped with a moisture-attracting material to absorb air moisture at night when the relative humidity is higher, and releases water when exposed to sunlight in the day for irrigation.
