At first glance, it looks like any other shantytown in Brazil: a precarious jumble of tin-roof shacks and shoddy streets.

But look closer, and the community garden, rainwater harvesting system and environmental education program are visible too: This “favela” is remarkably green.

On the outskirts of Sao Paulo, a concrete jungle of 12 million people, the impoverished community of Vila Nova Esperanca (Village of New Hope) is fighting to be a model of sustainable living.

After parent company AB InBev announced that three major businesses – namely Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive and Coca-Cola – are now supporting its 100+ Accelerator to fund sustainable start-ups, beer brand Corona has posted its own update on start-up financing.
The brand is making funds of up to $100,000 per business available to startups working to develop solutions to the world’s plastic pollution problem. To apply for funding under the scheme, called the Corona Plastic Free Challenge, applicants will need to outline how their product, system or technology can be used to reduce or remove plastic from a specific part of the beverage supply chain. Specific focus areas are plastic bottle cap liner alternatives and solutions for keeping products on pallets during transportation without plastic film.

Promoting sustainable agriculture-based solutions for local farmers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province Muhammad Farooq, a small-holder farmer from Ambar Tehsil of District Mohmand in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province lives jointly with his seven children and extended family. With 30 people of the family living under the same roof, Farooq took up beekeeping and small-scale vegetable production to help meet the increasing household expenses. Illicit crop cultivation was common practice in the mountainous terrain of district Mohmand, an area situated in the heart of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
