A circular economy enables us to restore natural ecosystems while still accelerating business and financial objectives. With 90% of CEOs seeing sustainability as important to success and 66% of consumers paying more for sustainable brands, the circular economy might be closer than we think—and it often starts in the supply chain.
Let’s look at a few examples. IKEA is on a journey to become more circular. Back in 2017, it developed its first designing for circularity guide, which helped define IKEA’s circular design. The results in the past few years have been impressive. In financial year 2019, the retail giant gave 47 million products a second life, 38 million products were resold through the as-is specialty shop, and more than 9 million products have been repacked back to the shelf.

The Woolmark Company, On and SALEWA have announced the prize winners and 12 innovative finalists’ concepts for the Woolmark Performance Challenge 2021 – the preeminent ideas platform for the sports and performance market. This year, the Woolmark Performance Challenge partnered with two brands for the first time: Swiss running specialists, On, and Italian skiwear experts, SALEWA. On challenged participating students to explore apparel innovations that respond to the highest demands of performance for modern outdoor runners, whist maximising fashion-forward wearability. Whilst SALEWA asked entrants to innovate low environmental-impact fabric technologies to create thermo-regulating apparel for mountain activities. The Woolmark Performance Challenge is a world-leading incubation program for tertiary students. It encourages innovative thinking resulting in ground-breaking ideas whilst fostering the education and development of the next generation of game-changers. From more than 400 entries from across the globe, the 12 most promising ideas were selected as finalists, before judges selected the winners for each category.

Sustainable tourism is the way forward for the village of Carlingford, according to Senator John McGahon. Speaking recently in the Seanad on a debate on tourism Senator John McGahon emphasised the importance of sustainable tourism. “Tourism that fully takes account of economic, social and environmental impacts is so important”, he said. “Sustainable tourism should ultimately be committed to having a low impact on local culture and the environment but should be looking to generate future employment for local people.”
