The National Trust has revealed that it will stop selling single-use plastics by 2022, following the action of eliminating plastic from its disposable cups and cutlery, opting for biodegradable products. It will also withdraw throwaway plastic bottles from sale across its 343 cafés and tea rooms and will swap all single-use plastic bottles for glass bottles in all sit-down cafés by the end of 2018.

A collaboration between a renewable oil producer and a UK-based plastic recycling specialist is seeking to “revolutionise the way that plastic waste is treated around the globe”. In mid-August Teesside-based ReNew ELP and Finnish refinery giant Neste signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see both companies work together to capitalise on the value of waste plastic as a raw material feedstock for the production of liquid hydrocarbons, chemicals and new plastics. In Europe, around 27 million tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste is generated each year. Approximately a third is currently collected for recycling, with the remainder either landfilled, incinerated or dumped, polluting vulnerable ecosystems.
They may be considered an eco-friendly way to generate energy, but wind turbines pose a major threat to migrating birds, which are at high risk of colliding with the giant blades while in flight. Now a new study has identified the collision ‘hotspots’ where migrating birds such as owls, swans and eagles are most at risk of being killed by turbines or power lines. The researchers have produced a map, revealing that birds are more likely to get too close to turbines and power lines on key migration routes, on the coast and at key breeding grounds. Many such spots lie in Mediterranean regions including the South of France, Southern Spain and the Moroccan coastline – such as around the Strait of Gibraltar. They are also vulnerable in Eastern Romania, on the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt and along Germany’s Baltic coast. Researchers say in light of their findings that power lines should not be built in places where birds risk colliding with turbines as they migrate.
A string of big-name food-to-go brands including McDonalds, Costa Coffee and Pret A Manger have unveiled plastic-free offerings to be piloted at Dubai Airport next month, as part of the airport’s commitment to eliminate single-use plastics.
