New Zealand Fashion Week, that is a wrap! When I think of New Zealand fashion designers, first that pops to mind is Karen Walker. Quirky. Colorful. Elegant. There’s something fascinating about visiting a new country and discovering new designer labels to love. And I travel far and wide to do so: Tel Aviv, Casablanca, and even Seoul! I’m proud to add New Zealand to my list of expanding fashion weeks around the globe.

It all started with the first Earth Day. At least that’s where I personally think the environmental movement really made its first, very public mark. Maybe you remember that day in 1970, maybe not. I was a high school junior back then, and I remember the emphasis on planting more trees and recycling cans and bottles. The spirit of Earth Day has grown enormously and morphed quite considerably. Now we tend to talk about climate change and sustainability. And while most of us have some knowledge in this area, we can be bit shallow on the subject. Yes, I’ll raise my hand first. The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) is launching a brand-new virtual event – the Festival of Circular Economy – at which the renowned sustainability pioneer Dr Walter Stahel will give the opening keynote speech. Taking place on 20-21 April, the Festival will be the first event of its kind focused exclusively on the circular economy. “This will be a celebration of the great work being done on circular economy projects around the world,” said Sarah Poulter, CEO of CIWM, “and will enable organisations, big and small, to identify opportunities to scale up these projects to achieve critical mass.” Dr Stahel is credited with inventing the concept of the circular economy in a paper published in 1982 and his keynote speech will provide a new vision for realising the full value of our natural resources. “It will be my privilege to show how ‘recyclers’ and ‘waste managers’ in charge of today’s legacy waste will become managers of ‘value platforms’ for components and molecules, once circular materials have been commercialised,” Dr Stahel said.
Looking at washing machines, research from Sweden’s Linköping University tries to solve part of the puzzle about how to shift business models to find more traction when it comes to being circular, as well as adding a social element.
