The City of Georgetown has partnered with Texas Disposal Systems to offer free holiday string-light recycling to all Georgetown residents. Residents can drop off their old or broken string lights through Jan. 31 at one of three collection stations:
City of Georgetown Collection and Transfer Station, 250 W.L. Walden Road
Georgetown Municipal Complex, 300-1 Industrial Ave.
Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. Eighth St.
Sun City residents may also drop off old or broken string lights at the Cowan Creek Pavilion, 1433 Cool Spring Way, in Sun City. The program is limited to string lights. Lights must be taken to a collection station and cannot be placed in residential or commercial recycling bins because they will damage the sorting machines at the recycling center. Yard art, inflatables, and other holiday lighting will not be collected.

In the middle of the Sahara desert on the western border of Algeria, refugee camps hosting tens of thousands of people rely completely on humanitarian aid: Water, food, and other basic supplies come in on trucks. Trash, on the other hand, doesn’t really leave; until recently, all the waste from the camps was dumped nearby in the desert into an ever-growing pile of plastic. But at a new recycling center at one of the camps, refugees are now turning that plastic trash into furniture and other products that they can use. Precious Plastic, an organization with a DIY recycling system developed by a Dutch designer who wanted to make recycling more accessible, helped set up the center after the United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, put out a call for solutions to help with the waste challenge at the camps.
Plastics have enjoyed exceptional growth in production for decades and are used extensively across a multitude of sectors including packaging, construction, electronics, automotive and agriculture. Prompted by concerns over plastic waste generation and impacts on terrestrial and marine ecosystems, in 2018 the European Commission published a strategy on plastics which was followed by legislative actions such as ban of certain single-use plastic items. In 2019 out of about 29 million tonnes of plastic collected in the EU the majority (68%) was either incinerated for energy recovery or ended up in landfills. There has been a debate for some time about whether the concept of chemical recycling can be among the solutions for managing plastic waste. Chemical recycling technologies have not yet reached the market at scale although recently there have been several announcements for the development of new plastic recycling plans in Europe and abroad. Objective of this event will be to bring together stakeholders from the plastics value chain to discuss whether and under what conditions chemical recycling technologiesaviercould make a contribution to the EU’s circularity and decarbonisation objectives.
An alliance of NGOs has called for the European Union’s Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) to be reformed to ensure that more corporates are disclosing relevant climate-related information.
The EU NFRD reporting mechanism was created to ensure that the impacts of sustainability are considered more broadly throughout the whole business
The Alliance for Corporate Transparency issued the calls for improvement to get more corporates providing relevant climate-related disclosure.
The Climate Disclosure Standard Board’s (CDSB) “Falling short?” report, for example, states that 78% Europe’s 50 largest listed companies, which have a combined market capitalisation of $4.3trn, are failing to report climate-related risks, despite both NFRD and the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) calling for such data to be included. The Alliance’s own research found that only 36.2% of European companies report on their climate targets, while just 14% report on aligning targets with the Paris Agreement.
