IBM’s foray into the blockchain ecosystem is deepening with a new partnership to track supply chains in the textile and fashion industries.

The Armonk, New York-based tech giant announced Monday that it’s teaming up with German textile manufacturer Kaya&Kato to develop a blockchain network that tracks the origin of fabrics used in the fashion industry. The new application will allow Kaya&Kato’s suppliers and customers to identify where their fabrics are processed, as well as understand each step of the production and distribution processes

Here, they look at the potential of the date palm in creating a bio-circular economy. 2021 marks the beginning of a new era for sustainability. It’s the year that the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) has begun. It’s the year where climate change returned to the agenda for America, with Joe Biden sworn in as President. And, with a degree of hopefulness, it’s the year where countries around the world could emerge from the pandemic. The final point is perhaps the most important. It’s been spoken about a lot and even branded as ‘The Great Reset’ by the World Economic Forum. As countries begin to open up again, there’s a great opportunity for the world to build back better and with a green recovery in mind.

Pondering the pandemic with 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients…  Amid the return of in-person interactions at Caltech’s 2021 Reunion Weekend, one event brought together three of the four 2021 winners of the Distinguished Alumni Award: NASA astronaut Bob Behnken, PhD (MS ’93, PhD ’97); Barbara Burger, PhD (PhD ’87), president of technology ventures and vice president of innovation at Chevron; and Laurie Leshin, PhD (MS ’89, PhD ’95), president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. (DAA winner Charles Elachi, PhD [MS ’69, PhD ’71], Caltech professor emeritus of electrical engineering and planetary science and former director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was unable to attend.)
