Should the Federal Dietary Guidelines Consider Sustainability?

Fashion accounts for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and is the second-most polluting industry in the world. But in an increasingly climate-conscious society, it is increasingly trying to present itself as sustainable to appeal to customers.  One big target is reducing greenhouse gas emissions and for the past two decades many brands have signed up to a scheme called the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), an independent body that awards grades for environmental performance.  However, the Guardian can exclusively reveal how the fashion industry’s impact on the planet is being hidden. Thanks to the way the scores are calculated, household names such as H&M and Nike can claim an overall decrease in annual carbon dioxide emissions – and receive high scores from the CDP – despite their actual emissions increasing.

This new alliance delivers a recycling process that will ensure no parts go to landfill, in an industry that has traditionally caused harm to the environment by incinerating parts or sending them to landfill.
Traditionally, the process of taking apart batteries has been very harmful to the environment over the years, with many unrecyclable parts going to landfill. Spent batteries produce 18,000 tonnes of pollution each year in the UK – which is worrying considering the increasing demand for vehicles.

More than a year since the emergence of COVID-19, the pandemic continues to devastate lives and economies. There is hope in vaccination programmes, but we have a long way to go. Our sympathies lie with those struggling with physical and mental health, grief and financial problems.
We must overcome this pandemic, for all of our sakes. But as we do so, we must understand that COVID-19 is not something we can fix, forget and return to normal.
