Primobius GmbH has executed binding option and licensing agreements with the North American steelmaking company Stelco Holdings Inc. headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario. Both parties have agreed on formal arrangements to commercialize Primobius’ proprietary advanced electric vehicle battery recycling and processing technologies in North America. Primobius is an incorporated joint venture between Australian Stock Exchange listed company Neometals Ltd. and private German engineering and technology company SMS group, to commercialize an environmentally friendly recycling solution for lithium-ion-batteries (LIB). Primobius has developed a CO2-reduced, two-step system combining mechanical and hydrometallurgical processes to bring high-purity chemicals back into the battery supply chain.
EIT Climate-KIC circular economy expert, Cliona Howie, will join 23 other experts at the European Circular Economy Stakeholder Platform Coordination Group and represent EIT Climate-KIC and the Circular Economy Cross-KIC Initiative. The transition from a linear to a circular economic model is an essential contribution to Europe’s efforts to develop a sustainable, low carbon, resource-efficient and resilient economy. In addition to the 2015 EU Action Plan for the Circular Economy, the European Commission and the European Economic and Social Committee created the European Circular Economy (ECES) Platform in March 2017 with the aim to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

The Board of Directors of the Material Handling Education Foundation, Inc. (MHEFI) recently announced its 2021-2022 Scholarship Winners. A total of $137,600 in scholarships was issued. For 40 years, MHEFI has supported material handling, logistics and supply chain students at many universities. MHEFI scholarships are awarded each year to students dedicated to entering the material handling, logistics or supply chain field, either within MHI member companies or the user community. These students are pursuing careers in the industry as engineers, project managers, management, researchers and professors. Many will be employed in manufacturing and the supply chain.
Ascend Elements, the vertically integrated lithium-ion battery recycling and engineered-materials company previously known as Battery Resourcers, announced it has entered into a contract with Navitas Systems, a U.S. leader in comprehensive energy storage solutions and a U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) contractor. According to the contract, U.S.-based Ascend Elements will deliver cathode active material made from recycled batteries and scrap to Navitas Systems in April 2022 for use in a DoD project. This is the first commercial sale of cathode active materials made with Ascend Elements’ patented Hydro-to-Cathode™ technology. “We see this as a milestone for the lithium-ion battery industry. With this agreement, Ascend Elements and Navitas will demonstrate how our Hydro-to-Cathode process elevates the value of recycled battery materials by transforming them into premium cathode active materials to be utilized in manufacturing new lithium batteries.
