I pledge to do the following to the best of my ability and to educate myself and others about how to live sustainably: I will reduce my waste I will compost within my community I will reduce, reuse, recycle, and redesign I will garden at home to offset my carbon footprint I will buy and consume locally grown food I will choose natural solutions to harmful pesticides and chemicals when gardening to protect my food and watershed. HSBC Jade invited clients to a trip traditionally reserved for senior staff and private banking clients to promote climate change awareness. The HSBC Sustainability Expedition was based in Malaysian Borneo where clients ventured into the Danum Valley’s rainforest encountering various animals including orangutans, Borneo pygmy elephants, flying squirrels and gibbons. The expedition was done in partnership with Earthwatch Institute and joined by science from the Royal Society South East Asia Rainforest Research Partnership (SEARRP).

Fisheries Council of Canada launches consumer guide, calls for adoption of Blue Economy initiative

The Fisheries Council of Canada, a trade group representing Canada’s wild-capture seafood industry, has issued a new guide to Canadian seafood geared toward Canadian consumers.  The guide, “Seafood, A Sustainable Superfood” is meant to be a “complete one-stop shop to demystify the process of buying and cooking sustainable Canadian seafood,” it said. It’s available to download for free from the FCC website.  “Part of building public trust in the Canadian seafood industry comes from arming consumers with the knowledge they need to source it, buy it and cook it at home,” FCC President Paul Lansbergen said.

Environmentalists have been talking about sustainability for over a decade, but it seems to have now entered the IT lexicon in a big way.  It is also added to our IT architectural framework as one of the business capabilities for which clients ask. Sustainability is one of the pillars of the AWS well-architected framework, and in January of 2022, IBM acquired Envizi, a sustainability software company. More on that later.  Digging more into the topic of sustainability, it became very obvious that edge computing inherently addresses a couple of sustainability facets: low latency and analyzing data at the source. We know these are two of the key tenets of edge computing. In this blog post, we define sustainability and present different aspects of how edge computing actually helps with sustainability.
