J Sol is a multifamily residential apartment building located in the Ballston/Virginia Square neighborhood of Arlington, VA. The 330,000 sf, 325-unit building has retail on the ground floor and 22 floors of residential units, amenity spaces, and terraces above. Our team provided comprehensive LEED New Construction consulting services for the project, facilitated strategic sustainability planning throughout the design process, and certification tracking assistance during construction. In addition to sustainability consulting, we performed LEED and code energy modeling as well as fundamental and enhanced commissioning.

Fisheries Council of Canada launches consumer guide, calls for adoption of Blue Economy initiative

The Fisheries Council of Canada, a trade group representing Canada’s wild-capture seafood industry, has issued a new guide to Canadian seafood geared toward Canadian consumers. The guide, “Seafood, A Sustainable Superfood” is meant to be a “complete one-stop shop to demystify the process of buying and cooking sustainable Canadian seafood,” it said. It’s available to download for free from the FCC website. “Part of building public trust in the Canadian seafood industry comes from arming consumers with the knowledge they need to source it, buy it and cook it at home,” FCC President Paul Lansbergen said.

Circular Economy should help to save organics in soil – says the European Parliament

The European Compost Network welcomes the positive vote of the ENVI Committee on its own initiative report on the New Circular Economy Action Plan. The ECN supports the report’s recommendations help agriculture farmers to replace mineral fertilizers with organic soil improvers such as compost and digestate and save organics in soil.
“We have to create a level playing field” said MEP Jan Huitema Rapporteur of the ENVI Committee “or we even have to give a plus to secondary raw materials so to reward their use”. The circular economy is not only a key model to protect the environment and reduce pollution of air, water and soil. It also allows countries to be less dependent on imports of raw materials and it reduces the huge greenhouse gas emissions associated with their mining and shipping.
An own-initiative report of the European Parliament is not legally binding but is a very useful indicator of the European Parliament’s priorities and concerns and it contains official calls on the European Commission to take action. In February (08/02), the European Parliament Plenary will vote on the report adopted last week by the ENVI Committee.
