Energy is both an enabler and a challenge for sustainable development. It powers our economies, fuels agriculture to feed billions of families, runs desalination plants in water- scarce countries, and keeps our homes cool or warm. Energy is fundamental for human development: it extends the hours people can work, how long a student can read a book, and what devices doctors can use in their hospitals.  In 1972, the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment recognized energy production and use had harmful effects on the environment, and effective management required better understanding of these impacts.
