Celebrating individuality, diversity, and embodiment, the third edition of Rio Ethical Fashion took place last week. Leading voices stirred up conversations about impending challenges and opportunities in the sustainable fashion industry. A spicy debate focused on the future of fashion upon the expansion of the Metaverse—the so-called “new, persistent virtual world.” Metaverse will host an increasing number of people throughout 2021. Currently, digital fashion is mostly restricted to video games (think of Gucci’s digital tennis).
As Nina knows well, Forestry at UBC is about much more than lumberjacks. During high school in Ottawa, Nina always enjoyed spending time in nature. Excited by encouraging others to get outside, she set up her own program at her school named Women for the Environment and the Great Outdoors. Nina chose UBC Forestry for her next step, and she is now continuing to explore the relationships between people and forests, as well as the plants, animals, air, and water in forested areas. During her time at UBC she’s conducted research on Douglas-fir and Western larch seedlings, climbed her first mountain, taken her first dip in the Pacific Ocean, and will graduate ready for an outdoor career of her choice.

Soot particles from oil and wood heating systems as well as road traffic can pollute the air in Europe on a much larger scale than previously assumed. This is what researchers from the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) conclude from a measurement campaign in the Thuringian Forest in Germany. The evaluation of the sources showed that about half of the soot particles came from the surrounding area and the other half from long distances.
