Zero Waste Europe released today its latest case study on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia, showcasing a fast transition towards zero waste and a circular economy in an tourist region. The case study exposes that Sardinia was until 2003 in the rearguard of Italy and Europe in terms of waste management, with a separate collection rate of only 3.8%, with the rest sent to landfills and incinerators.

Naviva, a new Four Seasons Resort in Punta Mita, Mexico, has redefined the glamping concept, injecting top-of-the-line luxuries into every indoor-outdoor detail. Situated on 48 forested acres, with views of the Pacific Ocean, the 15 biophilic suites defer to the spectacular setting while incorporating upscale amenities like plunge pools and alfresco showers. “All building forms, interior designs, and guest narratives can be tied back to a natural phenomenon found in the surrounding context,” explains Graeme Labe of Luxury Frontiers, a sustainability-focused design studio that specializes in remote hospitality projects.

Air France-KLM, Total, Groupe ADP and Airbus have joined forces to carry out the first long-haul flight powered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF)1 produced in France. At 3:40 p.m. today, Air France Flight 342 took off from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport’s Terminal 2E for Montreal with its tanks filled for the first time with sustainable aviation fuel produced in Total’s French plants.
This flight is a tangible result of the four groups’ shared ambition to decarbonize air transportation and to develop a SAF supply chain in France, prerequisite to the generalization of their use in French airports.

Entrepreneurs working in the circular economy see both the financial and environmental advantages of rethinking e-waste. Atlanta entrepreneur Stephen Wakeling has watched the space transform over the last decade while building Phobio, a SaaS platform designed to facilitate electronic device trade-ins. “The useful life of a phone is being elongated, and so is the path they travel around the world.” The circular economy, Wakeling says, might be more accurately described as a spiral now, as devices have several owners before ultimately getting recycled. And with key partnerships with Apple and Costco, the bootstrapped startup has big plans to reimagine the life cycle of more consumer products.
