Breathtaking aerial images have revealed 11 heron nests perched 100ft in the treetops of a 17th century stately home.  The amazing pictures captured the scenes at the heronry at the National Trust run Belton House in Grantham, Lincs.  It is the first time a drone has been used for the British Trust for Ornithology’s (BTO) annual census.  The flying gizmo hovered 50ft above the treetops and 100ft above the ground in order to take detailed pictures of the heron nests.  A total of 11 active nests were discovered clustered together in the branches of a Scots pine – nine more than experts expected to find.

Just like any battery technology, saltwater batteries store electricity for use at a later time. The main difference between saltwater batteries and other energy storage options (for example, lithium-ion and lead-acid batteries) is their chemistry. In saltwater batteries, a liquid solution of salt water is used to capture, store, and eventually discharge energy. Whereas a traditional lithium-ion battery uses the element lithium as its primary ingredient for conducting electricity, a saltwater battery uses sodium, the same element found in table salt.

Meteorological disasters have brought a great negative impact on people’s lives. With the rapid development of modern science and technology, the detection technology of meteorological disasters has been continuously improved. At present, satellite remote sensing detection technology has made gratifying achievements, and it has a good application in meteorological disaster prediction. In this paper, the application of satellite remote sensing technology in the process of meteorological disaster monitoring is discussed in depth. In traditional work, the accuracy and timeliness of meteorological disaster monitoring is the key and difficult point of meteorological disaster prevention.

Pondering the pandemic with 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients…  Amid the return of in-person interactions at Caltech’s 2021 Reunion Weekend, one event brought together three of the four 2021 winners of the Distinguished Alumni Award: NASA astronaut Bob Behnken, PhD (MS ’93, PhD ’97); Barbara Burger, PhD (PhD ’87), president of technology ventures and vice president of innovation at Chevron; and Laurie Leshin, PhD (MS ’89, PhD ’95), president of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. When he was 16, Eric Lundgren saw a landfill near his small hometown in northwest Washington, filled with brand-new products. Ever since, he’s been building businesses that try to stand between people and their most wasteful instincts. He started an electronics recycling company at 16. He went to prison trying to restore Windows on refurbished computers. He loaded up a junked BMW with used batteries to win a Guinness record for the longest single-charge electric vehicle drive, to make a point.  Now Lundgren is converting big, still-usable batteries from electric vehicles (EV) into backups for solar grids and other uses. If people aren’t going to use what’s right in front of them, he and his more than 100 employees will just have to do it for them. After our CEO Kyle Wiens toured the BigBattery plant in Chatsworth, Calif., and I talked to Lundgren about battery recovery, we came away with a whole new perspective on what you can do with a “used” EV battery.
