Sleigh the Holidays with Sustainable Gifting – The Planet will Thank you for your commitment to the circular economy

Sleigh the Holidays with Sustainable Gifting – The Planet will Thank you for your commitment to the circular economy

The holiday season is full of joy. There’s nothing quite like the sound of laughter among family and friends at special gatherings, the thrill of finding a great deal on a long-sought-after gift, or the tempting smells of your favorite holiday foods.  Unfortunately, for many of us, this joy brings with it a significant dent to our wallets and the environment. Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Americans throw away 25% more trash, resulting in approximately one million additional tons of trash per week.  Fortunately, however, there are easy ways you can shift your holiday gifting to be more sustainable, for both the environment and your budget.  We all love to present our loved ones with well-wrapped gifts. As you’re shopping for supplies this year, consider the following to minimize waste and save some cash:  Reduce the amount of wrapping paper you use. Many wrapping paper options are not recyclable due to the materials added to them, like sparkles, glitter, or laminated coatings. This can contribute to a significant increase in residential trash each holiday season. Get creative and consider ways to reduce your use of non-recyclable wrapping paper, such as repurposing old newspapers or paper grocery bags.  Reuse wrapping materials. Wrapping supplies can be expensive. Cut back your costs and your environmental impact by saving bows (you can attach them to a different gift with a loop of tape after the one-time-use adhesive is gone), gift bags (don’t write directly onto the bags when labeling them, so it’s easy to pass them on to another recipient), and ribbon after the gifts are opened. Recycle what you can. When you’re faced with a mountain of clutter from unwrapped gifts, it can be tempting to shove it all into a garbage bag and be done. Taking the time to sift through and separate items that can be recycled, however, is a great way to reduce your household waste.

NFBPWC – Simple Acts to Make a Difference in Climate Change TEXTILES

NFBPWC – Simple Acts to Make a Difference in Climate Change TEXTILES

As the cold weather begins & the holiday seasons are upon us, catalogues are arriving every day and tempting us with new fashionable clothes. However, shopping for new clothes- Fast Fashion- is generating 14 million tons of textile waste into our landfills. Textile waste can take up to 200+ years to decompose, releasing methane gas and toxic chemicals & dyes into our groundwater & soil. The average American discards approximately 80 pounds of textile waste -clothing, towels, linens, purses, shoes, etc.-each year.  Almost every kind of fabric if it is clean & dry, can be recycled, even the oldest pair of underwear, but not in curbside recycling bins. (www.greenmatters.com) Recycled textiles are sorted by type, fabric (synthetic versus natural fibers) & color, then pulled into fibers or shredded, re-spun into yarn to be woven, or compressed into filling such as insulation.

How Does Green Boiler Technology Work?

How Does Green Boiler Technology Work?

People have become progressively interested in green boiler technology for their households and businesses. That’s due to numerous driving factors, such as increasing awareness of the need for collective action to mitigate climate change’s effects and a desire to save energy.  Thus, many are curious about the benefits of a green boiler and how installing one at a home or commercial building could help meet energy-efficiency and eco-friendliness goals. Here’s a look at how green boilers work and how they’re becoming more common in today’s society.  What Are the Main Categories of Green Boiler Technology?  Green boilers encompass a broad category of possibilities and each one works differently. Plus, the definition of a green boiler remains fluid. Whereas some models are merely ultra energy efficient, others use the Earth’s resources to work and are less dependent on fossil fuels.

To start the week right, hybridization of artificial intelligence simulation and immersion in lithium-ion chemistry › Geeky News

How digital modeling and artificial intelligence combine their strengths – Artificial intelligence models based on machine learning (automatic learning) enter the world of digital simulation, enriching or speeding up calculations. Industrialists and researchers are exploring the possibilities of this promising hybridization.  “We can monitor the chemistry of a lithium-ion battery in real time during charging and discharging,” says Charlotte Gervilliers-Ants, a researcher at the College de France.  “Looking” inside a commercial battery in real time is a feat achieved by an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the Collège de France, Rennes Institute of Chemical Sciences, CNRS and the University of Montpellier. Explanations with Charlotte Gervilliers-Ants, researcher at the College de France and co-author of this paper published November 7, 2022 in the journal Nature Energy.

Sustainability at the Edge | IBM

Sustainability at the Edge | IBM

Environmentalists have been talking about sustainability for over a decade, but it seems to have now entered the IT lexicon in a big way.  It is also added to our IT architectural framework as one of the business capabilities for which clients ask. Sustainability is one of the pillars of the AWS well-architected framework, and in January of 2022, IBM acquired Envizi, a sustainability software company. More on that later.  Digging more into the topic of sustainability, it became very obvious that edge computing inherently addresses a couple of sustainability facets: low latency and analyzing data at the source. We know these are two of the key tenets of edge computing. In this blog post, we define sustainability and present different aspects of how edge computing actually helps with sustainability.

National Water Week panel shines light on conserving water in the beauty industry

When consumers think about saving water, it’s usually in the context of having a shorter shower or installing water-wise appliances, but one new brand has stepped up to raise awareness around water use in the beauty industry.  In celebration of National Water Week last month, Australia’s first water-responsible beauty brand, Conserving Beauty, held a Conscious Conversation event to discuss the importance of water and the beauty industry’s impact on the global water shortage.  Conserving Beauty Founder and CEO Natassia Nicolao, who was also named an AWA VIC Young Water Professional of The Year award finalist, said she was honoured to be the first beauty brand invited to join the association.  “At Conserving Beauty, we live and breathe water conservation, so we are thrilled to be a part of the Australian Water Association community to continue to drive awareness and conversation about the global water crisis,” Nicolao said.

Aussie company gives new life to old hybrid and EV batteries – carsales.com.au

Australian mechatronics firm IM Group has launched a new program designed to repair, repurpose and sustainably dispose of batteries after they reach the end of their service life in hybrid and all-electric vehicles.  Dubbed ‘Infinitev’, the program offers three distinct services to dealers, workshops and electrification OEMs depending on the sort of battery and the condition it’s in once it has served its primary purpose in an electrified vehicle.  The first of these is essentially a reconditioning service in which batteries that are faulty, slow to charge or no longer performing at an effective level are repaired and recirculated as a used spare.  According to IM Group, it’s often only a handful of cells that cause faults or need repairing, meaning the bulk of the battery is still in good working order.
