, D-Wave Embraces Gate-Based Quantum Computing; Charts Path Forward, TheCircularEconomy.comEarlier this month D-Wave Systems, the quantum computing pioneer that has long championed quantum annealing-based quantum computing (and sometimes taken heat for that approach), announced it was expanding into gate-based quantum computing.  Surprised? Perhaps we shouldn’t be. Spun out of the University of British Columbia in 1999, D-Wave initially targeted gate-based quantum computing and discovered how hard it would be to develop. The company strategy morphed early on.

As more and more companies are transitioning away from single-use plastics and actively seeking more sustainable alternatives, The Coca-Cola Company and PepsiCo have announced their exit from the Plastics Industry Association. The food and beverage giants announced their decision earlier this week, following a statement from Greenpeace to the same effect. “Companies understand that they cannot publicly say they want to end plastic pollution, while financially supporting an association that lobbies for our continued reliance on throwaway plastics,” said Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director John Hocevar. “This is a victory for every person that spoke up and asked Coca-Cola and PepsiCo to put their money where their mouths are, and tell the Plastics Industry Association to stop preventing plastic reduction efforts.”

Speaking at Facilities Show in May, co-located with IFSEC International, Ozge Celik Russell, Senior Analyst, Omdia, presented on how the smart building market is moving forwards since a pause in investment in the pandemic, adding that security will play a significant part in its evolution. Julian Hall reports.  For clarity, Ozge opened up the presentation by defining the term ‘smart buildings’ – being those that deliver building services through control systems that manage building operations, known as Building Management Systems (BMS).  A BMS is a single, centralised or distributed platform that acts as the building’s artificial intelligence. These systems aggregate data from equipment and sensors across many building domains and identify trends in building use and operations, acting upon the data through programmed sequential algorithms in order to reduce energy consumption, provide security and improve occupant comfort.
