Continent by continent and country by country our lives came to a grinding halt when the pandemic started spreading around the world. Movement of people, goods, and services were drastically reduced. By April, the number of air travelers dropped over 80% compared to the year prior, and at some point more than half of the world’s airplanes were grounded. Automobile traffic fell 70% in countries under lockdown orders. All of this in an effort to battle the virus and flatten the curve.
For the sustainable development of humanity, future efforts are necessary to develop effective technologies to reduce fossil fuels. Solar-driven hydrogen production from water splitting can be an attractive way to supply clean energy. However, the efficiency of the water splitting is limited by the reaction at the anode. Therefore Qiuhua Liang investigated some promising anode materials that may help improve the efficiency of the water splitting. The reaction that takes place at the anode is called oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is often regarded as the main bottleneck in water splitting because it is a so-called four-electron transfer process. The efficiency of the OER relies heavily on the anode material. Qiuhua Liang found some anode materials that may increase the efficiency of the OER.
